For the first time, Northridge is offering a Weightlifting Club under the supervision of new science teacher Mr. Rhee. Weight training is important for both athletes and non-athletes. It plays an integral part in enhancing physical work capacity, building muscle mass and improving bone density. Mr. Rhee has a background in coaching varsity football and has experience running the weight training program for the team.
Students who join the club will be put through cycles of strength programing and high-intensity interval training. Members will be able to track their performance and map their improvement throughout the year. An important component of the club will be learning how to lift with proper form.
Students will focus on the major lifts such as the squat, deadlift and bench press, followed by a circuit of high-intensity interval training. This will allow students to work on increasing strength, but also improving their cardio and overall work capacity. Students in the club that want to learn more complex olympic-style weightlifting movements will be free to meet with Mr. Rhee before or after school.
