Northridge provides musical ensembles and instruction for students of all ages and abilities. Music lessons and ensembles are also available during the summer. Students wishing to participate in high school band are required to attend rehearsals during the summer prepare for our various performance commitments during the year. There are no required actions for new middle school students interested in Band. If your son is interested in receiving instruction over the summer, please see our Summer Camps or contact Northridge Music Director, John Riccobono,, for more information.

Middle School Band

Meets three days a week during Activity Period, open to 6th through 8th graders with one or more years of experience on flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone horn, tuba and bass. Percussionists must audition for Middle School Band. Other instruments may be permitted by teacher consent. Middle School Band performs for the Northridge community at the annual Christmas concert and spring concerts and participates in additional performances during school.

Northridge String Ensemble

Meets two days a week, open to students with two or more years of experience playing a string instrument – violin, cello, viola or bass. Students explore works from the classical repertoire, and depending on the size of the group may combine with wind instruments to form a chamber orchestra. The string ensemble performs twice a year at our annual concerts and at other events such as our annual fundraising event.

Middle School Jazz Band

Open to students with at least two years of experience playing drums, piano, bass, guitar or a wind instrument. The students explore music from the jazz repertoire and learn how to improvise their own melodies in the jazz style. Middle School Jazz Band also serves as a preparation for joining High School Jazz Band.

Sixth Grade Music (required; full year)
The sixth grade music class will study music through the following elements:

  • note reading and music theory through study of piano
  • rhythm through introduction to percussion
  • performance and ensemble playing through study of a wind instrument (flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, or baritone horn)
  • music history through listening and study via online media resources

Students will a band instrument which they either rent or purchase: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, baritone horn or trombone. Students meet for music two days a week and are expected to practice 15 minutes a day at home. Lessons include basic piano, note reading, rhythm reading and music history.

High School Concert Band

Meets five days a week, open to 9th through 12th graders with prior experience on flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone horn, tuba and bass. Drummers must audition to join the percussion section and other instruments may be permitted based on ability and compatibility with the band. The high school band performs various styles of music including concert music, jazz, and contemporary popular music, and plays at various functions for the Northridge community, including two major concerts, home varsity basketball games, open house events and our annual fundraiser. Students in high school band receive a grade each marking period toward their cumulative GPA.

New students joining the high school band are asked to attend rehearsals during the summer to prepare for our various performance commitments during the year. Our high school band members have a repertoire of about 10 songs for jazz band and 20 popular songs for pep band, in addition to learning new concert music each year.

High School Jazz Band

The jazz band is made up primarily of students from the high school band who play saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, drums, and guitar. It meets five days a week during the winter-spring semester and performs at our spring concert as well as our annual school fundraiser, the “Dinner at the Ridge”. Auditions are held to determine readiness for the group and students learn aspects of playing in jazz style and jazz improvisation.

A Cappella Club

This student-run club, led by our Music Director, meets twice a week during school, open to 9th through 12th graders who have prior singing or musical experience, or show natural ability. A Cappella performs at our annual Christmas and spring concerts as well as various school functions, including singing the national anthem at home basketball games.
