About Fernandez

Mariano is a Northridge graduate, class of ’92. He spent 15 years in the Data Center Industry involved in all levels of build, infrastructure, operations, and compliance. He ran the tier 3 (99.982% uptime/year) Cyber Development Group International Data Center in Mount Prospect, Illinois and then co-designed the Cyber Innovation Labs tier 4 (99.995% uptime) facility; leading the development of both its build and operational infrastructure.

In 2015 he accepted a position in the Iron Mountain complex in Boyers, Pennsylvania, to supervise the build of the EMP GRID Services tier 3 Data Center. He spearheaded the implementation of EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) protection for it. Mariano directed the enclosure construction, which used the Faraday shield concept to block electromagnetic radiation, such as that caused by nuclear explosions or solar flares. The Boyers facility was the first certified enterprise data center purpose built for EMP protection in the Northeastern United States.

Prior to his involvement with data centers, Mariano was a private tutor primarily based at Harper College. He tutored Engineering Statics, Chemistry, Spanish, and all levels of math.

During his downtime Mariano enjoys spending time with his many nieces and nephews taking them canoeing, cycling and fishing. He particularly enjoys engaging their minds in the wonder of God’s creation through exploration and science with activities such as reading, shooting model rockets (and recovering them), and gazing at the stars. He also hopes to pass on to them his love of “fútbol.”
