About Mr. Macfarlane
John grew up in Iowa in a family of musicians. He earned his B.M. from Northwestern University and two M.M. degrees from the University of Maryland and Northwestern University. A professional violinist, conductor, chamber musician, artistic director, singer, and teacher, John has performed in the world’s greatest concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Musikverein in Vienna. He has also sung in operas, musicals, professional choirs, commercials, and films.
At Northridge, John serves as Music Director and teaches Art & Music in both Middle School and High School, including directing the High School Men’s Chorus. He and his wife Karyn, also an accomplished violinist, have three children, all of whom have attended Embers, Willows, and Northridge, including Ian ’28 and Graham ’32.
