About Mr. Herbster

Rory’s teaching experience began in the photography lab where he worked as teaching assistant while studying writing at Denison University. His love for working with his hands began in his middle school wood shop class at Wilmette Junior High School. It was these shop classes, and the ones he took in high school, where he learned skills such as joinery, furniture building and welding. After college he spent ten years as a lighting technician in the motion picture industry .

In 2001, Rory joined the Chicago Fire Department where he spent the next 21 years working in some of Chicago’s roughest neighborhoods and eventually working his way up to the rank of Lieutenant. To fill the time on his off days, Rory started a handyman business doing small home repairs, remodeling, electrical work and furniture building. After leaving the Chicago Fire Department, Rory and a close friend started RT Medical Training, a company specializing in CPR, first aid and EMT education.

In his free time Rory is involved with the Boy Scouts of America. He also spends a great deal of time as a DUBER (dad Uber), driving his son Max to his favorite fishing spots throughout Midwest. Rory’s other interests include cooking, gardening, building and fixing things, and passing these skills onto his son. Rory and his wife Kelly, the mastermind behind many of “his” great ideas, live on the Northwest side of Chicago.
