Soccer: Fundamentals

Category: Athletics

Overview

Is your son interested in becoming a great and creative soccer player with speed, agility, and a great understanding of the game? The Soccer Fundamentals camp is meant to introduce and drill 4 of the most essential soccer skills. These 4 skills will lay the foundation for success at the high school level.

Why Soccer Fundamentals?

Competitive drills of 1 v 1, 2 v 2 and 7 v 7 will be emphasized throughout the week of the camp. Campers will learn to use their skills in real, ‘live game’ situations. Campers will learn how to dribble with speed, think creatively under tight spaces, and move without the ball to create space and 1 on 1 opportunities. The camp will also cover ball control and foot speed drills in depth. Drills at the camp include:

  • Stationary & Moving First Touch Control
  • Dribbling – Both Feet
  • Short and long distance passing
  • Creative skills for tight spaces
  • One-touch and Two-touch finishing drills

Coach Alvaro Vargas, Varsity Soccer Head Coach

Alvaro teaches high school Spanish and middle school History at Northridge Prep. He grew up playing several local leagues and clubs in the Chicagoland area, playing in the CLASA Hispanic league in middle and high school, and then playing club soccer with South Side Fire. In college, he continued playing club soccer at Loyola University and then intramural soccer at Harvard College while getting his master’s degree in Theology. He has been coaching at Northridge for the past 8 years and has been the Varsity head coach for the last four seasons, in which the team has shifted their game play from long balls to forwards, to a possession-based system meant on developing the fundamental skills of the players. This style of play led the team to their first ISL Conference title in over a decade this past fall. The team also made history by winning the Sectional title for the first time this past season.
