Want a book come alive for your son? Do you want to equip your son with the habits and tools he needs to enjoy reading? Do you desire for your son to find a book he loves to read? The Epic Book Club is here to help your son discover that words were meant to come alive by equipping them with the tools and habits they need to enjoy reading.

Why Epic Book Camp?

We will read five brief and engaging selections of the beginning of the greatest boy’s fantasy adventure novel in the twentieth century, The Hobbit, by J.R.Toilken.

Beyond dramatic, accessible read-alouds and acting out the spellbinding scenes, we will also have challenges based on the novels:

  • Don’t Smash the Plates!
    • “Chip the Glasses, and Smash the Plates, that’s what Bilbo Baggins hates”
    • The Dwarves who barge into Bilbo’s home show off their dexterity and deviousness by nearly smashing all of Bilbo’s fine china. Can you do the same?
  • Sneaking Up Behind Trolls
    • “Mutton yesterday, mutton today, and blimey, if it don’t look like mutton again tomorrer,” said one of the trolls.”
    • Biblo fails to pickpocket the pocket of three terrible trolls. Can you do better than him?
  • Over Hill and Under Hill
    • “The yells and yammering, croaking, jibbering and jabbering; howls, growls and curses; shrieking and skriking, that followed were beyond description.”
    • Bilbo’s journey takes a dramatic detour as they are snatched by terrible croaking singing trolls. Can you fight your way out of troll city?
  • Riddles in the Dark
    • “A box without hinges, key, or lid, yet golden treasure inside is hid.”
    • Biblo barely escapes a deadly game of Riddles with the gnarled and white Gollum with a little help from his magic ring. Can you escape your invisible foe?
  • Flies and Spiders
    • “Then the great spider, who had been busy tying him up while he dozed, came from behind him and came at him.”
    • Bilbo’s company has a terrifying run-in with Spiders. Can you escape like Bilbo?

Join us on our incredible journey to prepare your son to love reading! Students will also have a chance to win their very own copy of The Hobbit to take home and continue the joys of reading.
