Overview
Would you like your son to grow in athleticism, self-confidence, self-defense skills and grace in movement? The Northridge instructors have seen these positive benefits repeated in men many times whenever they practice boxing. This could be for those that have competed in several different sports to those that have no experience at all in any sport. We encourage all interested students to participate, including those without boxing experience.
Camp objectives:
- Learn boxing skills and techniques
- Learn how to defend yourself
- Create self-confidence
- Offer an opportunity for students to find a niche
- Classes focus on training and basic fundamentals, as well as, self-discipline and conditioning.
Why Boxing?
Starting with the basic skills of jumping rope, shadow boxing and learning the basic fundamentals of how to block and throw different punches your son will grow in knowledge and self-confidence of how to defend himself and others when necessary. This camp will not include sparring or 1:1 boxing matches.
Boxing Skills will include:
- Stance
- Footwork
- Blocking and Throwing the Jab
- Blocking and Throwing Straight Punches
- Blocking and Throwing Hooks and Uppers

Emmett McGovern, Boxing Coach
Emmett is the director of Northridge’s recent, yet successful, Boxing Club. He is entering his 25th year as an educator. His first 18 years were at Saint Patrick High School, 2 years as a Business teacher and 16 years as a Counselor and an assistant basketball coach. In 9 of those years he was the Director of Student Services. He is now entering his 7th year as our Dean of Students. He and his wife, Colleen, are both lifetime Chicagoans, married for 38 years and are the parents of 4 children. You can contact Coach McGovern at emcgovern@northridgeprep.org.
