MISSION & PHILOSOPHY

Northridge offers interscholastic cross-country, soccer, basketball, and baseball to middle school students. Our mission in middle school athletics is to:

MS_XC_Champs_2nd_YearINCLUDE A LARGE NUMBER OF STUDENTS. We believe firmly in the importance of athletics in developing well-rounded young men, and we encourage all of our students to participate in middle school sports. In addition to contributing to physical fitness, athletics can be a fun and healthy extracurricular outlet. Through competitive athletics, our students learn important life skills such as teamwork, commitment, sportsmanship, responsibility, persistence, and leadership.

BUILD UNITY AND CAMARADERIE AMONG STUDENTS IN EACH GRADE. In sports, as in the classroom, students’ skills and abilities vary. We expect all athletes to provide leadership within their teams, and we require all of our athletes to respect and pull for each other. While playing time may vary from player to player, we insist that every player who is fully committed to a team has a meaningful role on the team.

HELP DEVELOP THE ATHLETIC SKILLS OF EVERY PLAYER. In the classroom, we are committed to developing every student; we make that same commitment to players in our middle school athletic program. During middle school years, boys mature physically at different rates. For this reason, we introduce beginner athletes to sports, develop intermediate athletes into advanced athletes, and challenge our very best athletes to become even better.

MS2ACHIEVE THE PROPER BALANCE BETWEEN ATHLETICS, ACADEMICS, AND FAMILY COMMITMENTS. To ensure that our student athletes have time for schoolwork and family obligations, our coaches have reasonable expectations in terms of practices and contests. We expect our students, in the classroom and on the athletic fields, to try their best during the time they spend on a subject or a sport.

SERVE AS A BRIDGE TO OUR HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC PROGRAMS. As a grade 6-12 school, Northridge has the unique opportunity to coordinate its middle school and high school athletic programs. Our outstanding high school coaching staff advises our middle school coaches in preparing their athletes for high school competition. We believe that a well run middle school program leads to a highly successful high school program.
