Northridge Play

Arsenic and Old Lace

This play cleverly blends the hilarious and the macabre, following two elderly sisters known for their charitable acts. However, their charity involves poisoning lonely old men.

About Arsenic and Old Lace

In 1941, people were looking for something to take their minds off the war. The Broadway production of Arsenic and Old Lace fit the bill! In 1944, MGM hired Frank Capra and Cary Grant to bring this story to life on the big screen, which is how it became a family classic where an eccentric family whose members border on the realm of insanity (or cross the border). The hero, Mortimer Brewster, is a drama critic who must deal with his crazy, murderous family and local police as he debates whether to go through with his recent promise to marry the woman he loves, Elaine Harper, who lives next door and is the daughter of the local minister.
