CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

James Stenson, Northridge Preps first headmaster and a popular author and speaker, has described character as “elusive to define, but easy to detect.”

It is what employers hunt for when they read between the lines of job-applicants’ resumes. It is what makes people proud to count us as life-long friends, not just acquaintances. And it is what young people long to see reflected in the actions of their parents, teachers and coaches.

Strength of character is at the heart of our parents’ long-term vision for their sons. Therefore, it is at the core of our mission. The outcome of united efforts to forge a young man’s character can only be known well into adulthood. Does he fulfill his personal and professional responsibilities with excellence? Is he a loyal and self-sacrificing friend? Do his relationships with his family, with his friends and colleagues, and with God reflect a unity of purpose?

The cumulative effect of the ways Northridge Prep integrates character formation into school life reinforces the foundational efforts of parents. Years after their sons’ graduation, we know we have been successful when parents and students alike can proudly answer these fundamental questions affirmatively.
