FAQS

NORTHRIDGE TRADITIONS

Can you tell me more about the four Halls?

Every student, faculty and staff at Northridge belongs to a Hall. The entire school, and each grade, is divided equally into four Halls. Each Hall name means “Knight” and is significant for its relationship to gentlemanly and heroic Knighthood. The four Halls are Cavalier, Paladin, Riddervon, and Vytis. The Halls foster camaraderie and school spirit through competition, as well as opportunities for leadership and service.

At least four times each year, we take a break from classes and have “Hall Fests,” which range from a round robin of sports to tug of war, Giant Jenga, and re-creations of the game show Family Feud. The whole year is a competition, where grades, teacher points, Hall Fests, fundraisers and more are converted into points spurring on the Halls as they compete in various events. The school year culminates in the spring with the presentation of the Hall Trophy to one victorious Hall.

Every new student is inducted into his Hall during the first week of school at an all-school assembly.

GENERAL INFORMATION

What time does school begin and end?

Monday-Thursday: 8:25 a.m. until 3:15 p.m.
Friday: 8:25 a.m until 2:35 p.m.

How early can I drop off my son at school in the morning? How late can he stay in the afternoon?

The front door of the main building is typically open by 7:30 a.m. Extracurricular activities, sports and other events take place after school allowing the opportunity for students to remain on campus. In addition, there is a daily quiet study hall after school every day, including Fridays, for one hour, proctored by a Northridge faculty member.

How do I find out about other families who live near me so we can organize car pools?

The Directory is your best source, it lists each family and their addresses. In addition, the front office may be able to suggest families in your geographic area.

To get the School Directory or advice, please contact Mary Ellen Wauck, Receptionist, at mewauck@northridgeprep.org or 847.375.0600

When will I found out my son’s advisor?

Your son will receive his assigned advisor at New Student Orientation on August 18. You will have the opportunity to meet your son’s advisor at Back to School Night on September 7, 2017.

Is my son assigned a hall locker or gym locker?

Every Northridge student is assigned a hall locker for the duration of the school year. Each hall locker contains a pre-installed lock.

Students in grades 6-10 will also receive a gym locker for physical education class. Each student is required to also purchase a lock from the School for his gym locker.

Your son will receive his locker assignments and be able to purchase a gym lock at New Student Orientation on August 18.

What are the lunch options for my son?

Plans for hot lunch on Monday-Thursday are still being worked out for the 2017-18 school year. On Fridays, a Northridge tradition is to have Pizza Fridays where pizza is delivered for those students who have signed up. Please check back for sign-up information for next year’s hot lunch and Pizza Fridays.

Where is the Lost and Found?

The Lost and Found is located in the basement next to the cafeteria. All items and clothing should be labeled with your son’s name. Every effort will be made to return a labeled item to the owner. Unclaimed items that remain unclaimed for a period of not less than two weeks will be bagged and sent to a charitable organization. Please contact Emmett McGovern, Dean of Students, for access to the Lost and Found.

Is there a Parent Association?

Yes. There is a Northridge Mother’s Club which provides a number of services to the boys and school. It is a great way to meet other moms. All moms are automatically part of the club and during New Student Orientation we will have a form you can fill out to express which areas (if any) you are interested in participating. The Mother’s Club manages its own budget and fundraising; there are optional $20 dues to join: pay if you can, no worries if you can’t. Please contact President Lilliam Civantos, 630.817.8847, to get involved.

How will my son find his classes on the first day of school?

Faculty and staff will be on hand to help students find their way. During New Student Orientation students will be shown the location of their locker and classrooms. It is not difficult to find classrooms – rooms 103 through 114 are on the first floor, rooms 203 through 215 are on the second floor.

What is the School cell phone policy?

Cell phone devices are not to be used at any time in the school building during the school day. The “school day” is defined as the time first period starts until the time school is officially dismissed for the day. “Any time” includes passing periods, study halls, and lunch. In addition, use of these devices during field trips will be determined by the activity coordinator.

A student’s cell phone or electronic device must be powered off (not set on vibrate or silent) and stored in the student’s hall locker during the school day. Students are not to carry these devices on their person, even if it is powered off. Parents are encouraged to help their sons adhere to this policy by calling the school office for any emergency situation. Northridge office personnel will contact the student and relay to him the message. In addition, if a student needs to make a call to his parents, he should ask for permission to use the phone in the main office.

Additionally, iPods, iPads, MP3 players, handheld game players and other types of personal belongings not appropriate in a school atmosphere are not permitted on campus during the school day or on any school-sponsored trip.

Does my son need to carry his gym clothes back and forth to school every day? (Grades 6-10)

All students in grades 6-10 will be assigned a gym locker. Many students choose to keep their gym uniforms and shoes at school, bringing them home on the weekend for washing. Others choose to carry a separate gym bag with their clothing in it back and forth each day.

COMMUNICATION

How can I get a message to my son during the school day?

If you call our main phone number, 847.375.0600, our Receptionist can either deliver a message or arrange for your son to call you back, depending on the urgency of the situation.

My son just missed a day of school because he was sick. How does he get the assignments he missed?

A quick phone call or email to a fellow classmate will do the trick. Or feel free to email your son’s teachers regarding missed assignments.

Where do I find contact information for various departments and individuals?

Faculty phone extensions are listed under the Faculty Profiles tab on our website.

How often can I meet with my son’s teacher or advisor?

You will have the opportunity to first meet your son’s teachers at Back to School Night on September 7, 2017. Additionally, we hold Parent-Teacher Conferences twice per year. However, you never have to wait for a conference to meet or talk with your son’s teacher or advisor. We welcome any and every opportunity to discuss his progress, including intellectual, physical, moral and spiritual development.
